SAVE QUEEN’S PARK GALLERY !
Please sign the petition to the Ministry of Culture to save QPG. Taking five minutes to send a message to your friends and colleagues would make a world of difference too!   www.change.org/petitions/save-queens-park-gallery
We also need to hear from you about how you feel so go to Facebook page  Save Queen’s Park Gallery  https://www.facebook.com/SaveQueensParkGallery and comment and put images you may have.
Why signing the petition is important.
The Daphne Joseph Hackett Theatre was closed in 2003 and the Queen's Park Gallery in June  2011 due to years of degeneration and lack of up-keep to the physical structure of Queen's Park House. Both facilities were integral to the artistic and cultural landscape of Barbados, being the most affordable, accessible and recognizable public gallery and theatre spaces on island. Additionally this notable structure, dating from 1786, is a critical component of Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison which has recently been subscribed to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Since August 2011 the building has been boarded up, but no works have started, whilst the gallery has been relegated to an unsuitable space at the Pelican Village. It is feared that without public outcry this integral creative facility will fall into further irreparable disrepair - following in the footsteps of the Empire Theatre.

POP’  ( from Sheena Rose)
“Pop!” is an art show I would love to curate this year. This show is about Pop Art in Barbados/Caribbean, what is current in your culture and how would you interpret that, like maybe in fashion , photography, illustration, performance and so on.In this show, I will select ten artists and 5 performers for the exhibition. To apply to “Pop!” you must email 2-5 images of your work, artists statement, proposal/ ideas for this show. You can email to bajanrose27@hotmail.com or projectspace.arts@gmail.com. The deadline to apply is the ending of
June 7th 2012.
I believe this show will be interesting with performance too because the performers can interpret pop music, dance, etc for the opening night so it will be interesting to see art and also performances.
When the artists are selected, each artists will pay 100 - 125 bds to help contribute to the invitations, food, wine, hanging material, zine, photographer and any other necessary material we will need. I am not sure about the performers as yet but maybe around 50 - 75 bds to also contribute too. It may seem like a lot but this will make the show look really great and professional. We can 2 performers at the opening and 3 at the closing of the exhibition.
Now what is great about the show, everyone can also take part somehow to the show too, for example we will need 2 writers, one to write in the zine ( small magazine or catalog) and this writer will be pay for writing in this catalog and the other writer will write for the projects & space blog and this writer will be feature in the group, blog, Facebook and twitter.
We will also need two photographers, one to take for the opening night and the money we contributed will pay this photographer, each artists and performers will get the photos album of the exhibition and their work, which is important to document from the photographer. The second photographer will take photos for the projects & space group and will be feature in the blog,Facebook, twitter etc. We will also need a graphic designer to design the invitation of the show and this graphic designer work will be on the cover of the zine, projects & space timeline and also feature in the blog, Facebook and twitter, etc. We will also need a filmmaker to document the show and this filmmaker will be pay because it is important to document any art shows.
The artists and performers will be feature in the blog,Facebook and twitter. Also the artists can sell their work in the show. We have to make a proposal to Morning side gallery and see if we are accepted to show around the time of October 2012. I believe this show will be really professional and AWESOME if we all work together. Let’s see how we interpret POPART in our culture. Thank you!”    ………..

BARBADOS SUMMER ARTS FESTIVAL
Art is about the core elements of our lives, manifested in what we see, hear, taste, make, read and write, wear, and how we move. It is the creative footprint that becomes the discernible difference between people of different countries and experiences. It is a unique cultural trademark and the magnet that draws us to explore the corners of the world in search of those aspects of life that make us different from each other. It is the goal of the Barbados Summer Arts Festival to encourage the celebration of these seven elements that reflect our cultural identity and as we do so, to foster their development, allowing gainful and sustainable development for their practitioners.
