Barbados Yacht Club Christmas Art, Craft & Gift Show & Sale. Sat Nov 24th. 10am – 4pm
Barbados National Trust Hosts “Photographic Memory”. Photographs evoke memory by documenting what has disappeared and altered over time. These fields and hills; the standpipe and the chattel house; industrial, maritime, military and mercantile structures; markets, and people’s daily life among them—Barbados’ rich heritage of photography has captured these images of passing eras. These will be examined when the Barbados National Trust hosts an evening seminar entitled Photographic Memory: Our Heritage in Images, at 7 p.m. on Friday, November 2, at Trust headquarters, Wildey House. The National Trust is the repository of the important Euchard Fitzpatrick and Edward Stoute photo collections, which capture the island’s changing sights since the advent of photography. Starting with these stunning black-and-white images, a distinguished panel—Ronnie Carrington, Bob Kiss, and Harclyde Walcott—will lead the evening’s interactive discussion. Can you recognise these places? That question will be the basis of a competition highlighting the changes that have occurred all across the Barbadian landscape. The three experts will also talk about the beginnings of photography in Barbados, the art of photography, what values to look for, preserving photographs, and more. Their work, and some by other photographers, including prints from the Trust’s collection, will be available for purchase, or to order in time for Christmas. The structure of the evening is designed to engage and entertain the audience. As they do at Antiques Roadshow, guests are invited to bring their own photographic treasures (minimum size 8x10 inches) for evaluation. An informal reception with an open bar will follow. The cover charge is $15 for National Trust Members, $20 for all others, this includes Wine and cheese etc For further information, please contact Mr.William Gollop, General Manger, Barbados National Trust at 246 426-2421 or email natrust@sunbeach.net . NAGC November 7, 2008 NATIONAL ART GALLERY COMMITTEE
“Art for Export" opens at the Zemicon Gallery and Bagnall’s Point Gallery Sunday November 11th . The National Art Gallery Committee is pleased to present this outstanding exhibition of works of art which have represented Barbados abroad. The initiative for this exhibition springs from the reviews of “Infinite Island” - an exhibition of contemporary Caribbean art hosted by the Brooklyn Museum of Art in New York from August 07 through January 08 – and the perception that the Barbadian art community is ready to re-visit the discourse about the international representation of Caribbean art. “Art for Export” showcases Barbadian works previously shown overseas. The curatorial approach to this exhibition is experimental in that the exhibition is viewed as an appendix to the accompanying catalogue. The catalogue publicizes a number of questions addressed to Barbadian artists and curators whose work or selections are featured in this show as well as their responses and comments.
The public is invited to view the exhibition which continues through December 7th. Zemicon Gallery is located in the James Fort Building, Hincks Street. Bagnall’s Point Gallery is located in Pelican Village, Princess Alice Highway. The galleries are open to the public Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday 10 AM – 4 PM, closed on Monday.
The public is also invited to the “Art for Export” Forum Sunday November 25th at Bagnall’s Point Gallery to discuss the issues raised in the catalogue.
