Tides Art Gallery The Tides Restaurant, Holetown, St James.
During December, an exclusive exhibition of fine art by Jonathan Guy Gladding (JAG). JAG first came to the island of St. Lucia in 1999. It was there that he found true artistic inspiration. An unending supply of rich subject matter all illuminated by a quality of light he had never experienced. Abandoning his cubist style of painting, he started to work in realism – JAG felt it was best suited to communicate and paint the feelings and ideas that he wanted to share. It is his desire to tell a story in details, whether it’s about the warmth and spirit of the people of the Caribbean or something as simple as the way in which the reflected light colours the edge of a child’s face.
The gallery will also feature local fine art and photography. Open 7 days a week, 9am - 11pm. Tel (246) 432 2084 or (246) 432 8356. email tidesart@sunbeach.net website www.tidesartgallery.com

3. Black Diaspora Art symposium will take place February 13 & 14, 2009 at Frank Collymore Hall in Barbados. This event is being organized by U.K. artist/curator David A Bailey in collaboration with the National Art Gallery Committee (NAGC). The symposium will take as its starting point Stuart Hall and questions he poses in his essay called “Modernity and Its Others: Three Moments In The Post – war History of the Black Diaspora Arts” . The symposium will explore some of the themes in Hall’s paper but will focus more on a contemporary Caribbean context looking at local, national and international issues such as: the returning artists experience, the history of art in the Caribbean and the last 15 years of Caribbean initiatives such as CCA7, Havana and Carifesta. A number of local, regional and international scholars, curators and artists who have made key contributions in this area have been invited to Barbados to participate. It is envisioned this event will provide an opportunity for the Barbados art community and wider local audience to participate in the forums; and will present contemporary Barbadian art and artists to a panel of distinguished experts in related fields. Also featured Multi-sited exhibitions around Bridgetown by Barbadian artists Sheena Rose, Indrani Gall, Ewan Atkinson, Ingrid Persaud, Francis Ross and Arthur Edwards.
4. ArtistNet database of Barbadian artists - Visit the NAGC website at www.nagc.bb . To peruse the ArtistNet database of Barbadian artists click 'Artists' . The database is a free NAGC service for all visual artists in Barbados.
