Jonathan Guy Gladding, Friday, 28th November, 6pm-9pm. During November, an exclusive exhibition of fine art by Jonathan Guy Gladding (JAG). JAG first came to the island of St. Lucia in 1999. It was there that he found true artistic inspiration. An unending supply of rich subject matter all illuminated by a quality of light he had never experienced. Abandoning his cubist style of painting, he started to work in realism – JAG felt it was best suited to communicate and paint the feelings and ideas that he wanted to share. It is his desire to tell a story in details, whether it’s about the warmth and spirit of the people of the Caribbean or something as simple as the way in which the reflected light colours the edge of a child’s face. Pursuing his art full time, JAG has exhibited extensively throughout the Caribbean, England and the US, receiving numerous awards. He continues to live and paint in St. Lucia where he still finds inspiration and inspires others.
The gallery will also feature local fine art and photography.

1. Black Diaspora in the Visual Arts symposium - The 2nd event of the Black Diaspora in the Visual Arts series will be 3-day symposium, February 13, 14, 15, 2009 at Frank Collymore Hall in Barbados. This event is being organized by U.K. artist/curator David A Bailey in collaboration with the National Art Gallery Committee (NAGC).The Symposium will feature a number of local and international scholars, curators and artists who have made key contributions in this area will be invited to Barbados to participate. It is envisioned that such an event will providing an opportunity for the Barbados art community and wider local audience to participate in the forums; and will present contemporary Barbadian art and artists to a panel of distinguished experts in related fields. This event will also feature Multi-sited exhibitions of works by Barbadian and international artists that will be staged around Bridgetown.

UNESCO-Aschberg Bursaries for Artists Programme 2009
Announcing the call for applications for the 2009 UNESCO-Aschberg Bursaries for Artists.
As an implementation instrument of the Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions, the Programme promotes the mobility of young artists through sojourns in art residencies abroad so as to foster creativity and cultural diversity. It recognizes the important contribution of artists in the creative process and their central role in nurturing the diversity of cultural expressions. Artist-in-residence bursaries are being offered in institutions around the world in the following three fields: visual arts, creative writing and music.
