ZEMICON GALLERY

1. The Zemicon Gallery cordially invites you to the opening of ‘Hide and Seek’,  an exhibition of work by Tonya Wiles. Sunday June 7th, 6pm-8pm.

Artist Talk: Sunday 14 June 2009 from 4 p.m. 6 p.m.

Exhibition end June 28th.

On June 7th, Tonya Wiles - a returning Barbados Scholar - opens her first solo-exhibition in Barbados. Tonya has recently come back to the island after pursuing her Bachelor (Honours) Degree in Painting at the prestigious Wimbledon College of Art in London. During and after her studies, she has hosted and participated in a number of exhibitions in the heart of the London and was noted by collectors as well as galleries in London for her skill and witty inventiveness. She continues to maintain tight connections with London and will be traveling with her work in the near future. Tonya is excited by the prospect of making a contribution to the Barbados art scene and intent on keeping her art intriguing, fresh, and accessible. The exhibition is titled “Hide and Seek” and runs to the end of June.

Hide and Seek proposes a playful approach to the way we view art.

Maybe it’s not about understanding a painting but experiencing it.

Maybe it’s not about looking at a sculpture but playing with it.

Maybe it’s not about the work presented but the people who come to see it.

Maybe it is about hiding and seeking.

Hiding traditional and cultural understanding of art.

Seeking inventiveness, creativity and challenge.
