DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOPS

Chris Alleyne at ArtBeat has announced the availability of a number of digital photography workshops. These are aimed primarily at users of digital SLR cameras, but the list also includes one workshop designed for users of point-and-shoot digital cameras who are interested in getting a better understanding of how their cameras work. INTRODUCTORY ART CLASSES

Every Thursday from 1pm – 3pm Barbadian artist Fielding Babb and BARP invites people to join Fielding at The Main Guard ( building with clock tower) Verandah, The Garrison for an opportunity to get creative juices flowing. People need to bring an hb pencil, a 3B pencil and a sketch pad and participate in what will be and enjoyable, enlightening and creative experience.

ERROL BARROW CENTRE FOR CREATIVE IMAGINATION

Curated by C.M. Harclyde Walcott. Works will be exhibited at the Errol Barrow Centre’s Gallery, The Queen’s Park Gallery and Zemicon Gallery. Show ends September 26th

2. Dance Choreographers Workshop. September 7th until September 18th This 1st Choreographer’s workshop will define ‘Your Voice: Ideas and Form in Contemporary Choreography’, for two weeks. This 1st workshop will be led by Ms. Tania Isaac, Artistic Director and founder of Tania Isaac Dance (Company), Philadelphia. Weaving together movement, text and video, Tania writes independently and conducts presentations and workshops as a Commonwealth Speaker with the Pennsylvania Humanities Council and to teach internationally. Registration for this workshop begins on August 31st 2009 and, forms are available from the Errol Barrow Centre for Creative Imagination and their website www.cavehill.uwi.edu/ebcci . 3. Calypso Songwriter’s Workshop. September 15th to 18th and September 23rd to 26th with Dr. Hollis ‘Chalkdust’ Liverpool and Mr. Stedson RPB’ Wiltshire. This workshop is open to the budding calypso lyricist, spaces are limited and registration is encouraged. This workshop will open with a public lecture by Dr. Liverpool on September 15th at 7:30 p.m. whose research interest lies in ethnomusicology and the progression of Calypso music to its modern presentation. Chalkdust is the reigning Calypso Monarch of Trinidad and Tobago a title he has won 8 times. Our other presenter is equally renowned in this art form here in Barbados;’ Stedson Red Plastic Bag Wiltshire the Reigning Calypso Monarch of Barbados. RPB, as we affectionately call him, is one of Barbados’ top Calypsonians having won the coveted Pic O De Crop Competition a record 9 times since beginning his career in 1979. He, along with being a top performer with exciting props, is a top lyricist penning his winning tunes. As any good artist he looks forward to sharing his talent with young budding artist to assist them in the honing of this craft ensuring the art form continues. Both stellar practitioners to engage if you are a lyricist or Kaisonian! This course will be followed by one for arrangers. 4. BIM. BIM Arts for the 21st Century May Volume is Available at just $25 per copy from the University Bookshop and local Bookstores. This new edition features the work of B.C. Pires, Peter Wickham, Raymond Maughan, Melissa Goddard, Samuel Selvon, Karen Lord and Kwame Dawes. Look out for its launch on September 8th 2009!

5. Moon Readings. A new series of play readings commencing November 2009. Entitled Moon Readings, they will host a series of directed play readings by the cycle of the moon on the crescent of the Centre. The EBCCI is currently calling for works to be submitted for consideration. All plays are welcome, please submit them to decarla.applewhaite@cavehill.uwi.edu or deliver them directly to the EBCCI. NIFCA

The National Independence Festival of Creative Arts is the concept and dream of the late Arden Clarke and his wife Jeanette Layne - Clarke, who, with a group of committed cultural aficionados coordinated and staged the first festival in November of 1973. NIFCA has always sought to unearth the very best of Barbadian talent, encouraging persons from all walks of life to create and submit their entries in seven disciplines: Fine Art/Craft, Literary Arts, Photography, Film/Video, Drama/Speech, Culinary Arts, Dance.
